Reduced weight = more horsepower!
While the performance industry has often used the gauge of power-to-weight ratio, we decided to look at weight-to-power (W/P) ratio instead, since it’s the pounds we’re improving as power remains the constant. We find the W/P ratio by simply dividing total vehicle weight by horsepower. Consider this: a 3,000-pound car packing 450 hp requires each horsepower to carry 6.66 pounds–the exact same ratio as a 4,000-pound car with 600 hp or a 2,000-pound car with a mere 300 hp. Work the numbers backward and it becomes clear that shedding pounds is just like adding horsepower.
To choose the correct battery for your race car/automobile you have to first consider the amount of current your alternator puts out. Once you know your max output of amperage your alternator puts out, then you need to know how much cranking amps you need to turn the engine over. Match those up and you know which battery to choose.
The ETX1200 is designed for 120 amp alternators or less with 1200 Peak Cranking Amps (PCA).
The ETX900 is designed for an 80 amp alternator or less with 840 Peak Cranking Amps (PCA).
The ETX680/ETX680C or the ETX36 series is designed for 60 amp alternators or less with 680 Peak Cranking Amps (PCA).
