EarthX Lithium Battery Technology

Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) Battery Technology

Not all lithium batteries are equal. There are dozens of different lithium battery chemistries, and each chemistry has different characteristics, performance, and applications.

EarthX batteries use Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) cells. LiFePO4 chemistry offers an excellent combination of high performance, robustness, durability, and safety for demanding applications.

EarthX uses LiFePO4 technology because it is the safest and most robust lithium chemistry. It provides the performance characteristics needed for applications such as aviation, motorsports, powersports, automotive, and other high-performance vehicles.

How Are Lithium Batteries Different from Lead-Acid Batteries?

Lithium batteries are fundamentally different from traditional lead-acid batteries.

A lithium battery contains multiple individual lithium cells that must be monitored and managed electronically. The cells need to remain within appropriate voltage and charge limits, and their charge levels need to be balanced to maintain proper battery operation.

Some lithium battery manufacturers rely on an external balancing charger that must be connected periodically to balance the individual cells.

EarthX takes a different approach.

Integrated Battery Management System (BMS)

Inside every EarthX Battery is a Battery Management System (BMS).

The BMS continuously monitors the individual cells and manages the battery’s operation. It monitors the charge level of each cell, balances the cells when needed, and helps protect the battery from overcharge and over-discharge conditions.

This integrated battery management means EarthX customers do not need to periodically connect a separate balancing charger to maintain cell balance.

The result is a lithium battery system designed to provide:

  • More starting power
  • Improved starting performance
  • Longer battery life
  • Cell monitoring and balancing
  • Protection against overcharge
  • Protection against over-discharge

All types of lithium batteries, not just EarthX batteries, require a Battery Management System (BMS) or equivalent battery management technology to monitor and balance cell charge and protect against overcharge and over-discharge.

Why Choose an EarthX Lithium Battery? — S.P.E.E.D.

EarthX batteries are designed to provide the performance advantages of modern lithium battery technology while replacing many of the limitations of traditional lead-acid batteries.

S — Speedy Charging

EarthX batteries can charge 2–3 times faster than a comparable lead-acid battery under appropriate charging conditions.

Because EarthX ETX-Series batteries include an integrated Battery Management System (BMS), no separate balancing charger is required for routine cell balancing.

P — Powerful & Long Lasting

EarthX lithium batteries are designed to provide strong engine-cranking performance and can improve starting performance.

A typical EarthX 12V-series battery has a resting voltage of approximately 13.3V, compared with approximately 12.6V for a conventional lead-acid battery.

EarthX batteries can also provide a significantly longer service life than traditional lead-acid batteries, with some applications achieving up to 6 years of service life.

E — Extremely Lightweight

EarthX lithium batteries can be up to 80% lighter than comparable lead-acid batteries.

Reducing battery weight can provide significant performance benefits, particularly in aircraft, race cars, motorcycles, ATVs, UTVs, and other performance-oriented applications.

Less battery weight can mean more useful load and improved overall vehicle performance.

E — Environmentally Friendly

EarthX batteries are designed to be environmentally and user friendly.

EarthX lithium batteries are nonhazardous, nontoxic, and nonpoisonous under the applicable product classifications.

Unlike conventional flooded lead-acid batteries, EarthX lithium batteries:

  • Do not sulfate
  • Do not corrode from leaking battery acid
  • Will not freeze under normal specified operating conditions
  • Will not boil over
  • Do not require water to be added
  • Do not contain liquid electrolyte that can spill like a conventional flooded lead-acid battery
  • Do not require acid maintenance

D — Discharge Rate

EarthX lithium batteries have a much slower self-discharge rate than traditional lead-acid batteries.

Because the battery retains its charge for longer periods when not in use, the need for frequent recharging can be greatly reduced.

This makes EarthX batteries particularly useful for vehicles and equipment that may be stored or used intermittently, including aircraft, motorcycles, powersports vehicles, race cars, and specialty equipment.

Other Features of EarthX Lithium Batteries

Flexible Mounting Orientation

EarthX batteries do not require a specific mounting direction and can be installed on their side or upside down, provided the installation is otherwise appropriate for the specific application.

This gives customers greater flexibility when replacing a conventional battery or designing a new battery installation.

Industry Testing and Standards

EarthX batteries are tested to applicable industry standards, including SAE, UL, and CE standards and requirements, as applicable to the specific battery and application.

Flexible Battery Connections

EarthX batteries offer flexible battery connection options.

Depending on the specific battery model and application, batteries can be used in left- or right-side polarity configurations, providing greater flexibility when installing the battery in different vehicles and equipment.

Some EarthX batteries also provide the option to connect battery leads directly to the vehicle or equipment.

EarthX batteries are assembled, engineered, and designed in the United States.

Our engineering focus is on developing lithium battery systems specifically for the requirements of the applications in which they are used.

EarthX specializes in lithium battery technology for applications including:

  • Certified aircraft
  • Experimental aircraft
  • Motorsports
  • Powersports
  • Motorcycles
  • ATVs and UTVs
  • Racecars
  • Specialty and custom applications

Long Storage and Cycle Life

EarthX lithium batteries can provide up to 4,000 charge/discharge cycles, depending on the specific battery model, application, operating conditions, and charging practices.

6 year average life in appropriate applications and can be more than four times the life of a conventional lead-acid battery.

The low self-discharge characteristics of lithium technology also make EarthX batteries well suited for applications that experience periods of storage or limited use.

Wide Operating Temperature Range

EarthX lithium batteries have a specified operating temperature range of approximately -30°C to +60°C, depending on the specific battery model and application.

Lithium batteries use dry-cell technology, eliminating the liquid electrolyte found in conventional flooded lead-acid batteries.

Under specified operating and storage conditions, EarthX lithium batteries will not:

  • Freeze
  • Boil over
  • Sulfate
  • Corrode from leaking electrolyte

This makes lithium technology particularly advantageous in applications exposed to vibration, temperature changes, storage periods, and demanding operating environments.

EarthX Lithium Battery Technology vs. Lead-Acid

The fundamental difference between EarthX lithium batteries and traditional lead-acid batteries is not simply the battery chemistry it is the combination of cell chemistry, battery management, weight, power, charging characteristics, and service life.

EarthX combines LiFePO4 lithium cells with an integrated Battery Management System (BMS) to create a battery designed specifically for high-performance applications.

The result is a lightweight battery technology that can provide:

  • Up to 80% weight reduction
  • Higher resting voltage
  • Strong cranking performance
  • Faster charging
  • Lower self-discharge
  • Longer service life
  • Integrated cell balancing
  • Electronic battery protection
  • Flexible installation
  • No liquid acid electrolyte
  • No water maintenance

From aviation and motorsports to motorcycles, ATVs, UTVs, automobiles, and specialty equipment, EarthX lithium batteries are designed to replace outdated lead-acid battery technology with a modern, lightweight, high-performance alternative.
